Little Mount
 
 

The place was known as Peria Malai (Big Mount) or Farangi Malai. The Portugese simply followed the tamil designation and called it Monte Grande (Big Mount). After the East India Company stationed their forces there the place was known as ST.Thomas Mount.

Tradition has it that St.Thomas died on St.Thomas Mount while praying before.. a stone(cross) , pierced with a spear. It (stone cross) had been sweating from 1558. The last record of the event was made by Fr.Tachard.

According to tradition, the picture of Holy Virgin(Madonna) was painted by evangelist St.Luke and that St.Thomas brought here with him.
